OUGD504 - Brief 3 - Development: Scale

OUGD504: Brief 3: Type In Context

Development: Scale

With the layout, illustrations and pictures developed I turned my attention to the scale of the physical publication, I initially designed my publication with an a5 scale (a4 spread) as this was typical of a range of books analysed as part of my research, I printed a range of mock ups to physically interact with the different scales; a6, a5 and a4 pages and printed these to find out which was the most appropriate scale for my final publication.

The different scales altered the way you interact with the publication, I instantly felt the a4 mock up was too large and became impractical, the pages were oversized and it created too much white space to be aesthetically pleasing. The A5 scale worked well however the text was too large on the page and would need to be developed further. My personal favourite was the a6 mock up as this sat in the hand well and the components of the publication were proportionat. The a6 scale felt like a city guide which would be approbate considering the content demonstrating how other publications not just specialist design books can influence the design treatment.

I then asked a range of students for feedback regarding the scale of the publication, all the students asked agreed the a4 scale was too large and impractical there was however debate between the a5 and a6 mock u as to which would be most suitable. students gave feedback such as 'I like this size (a5) because it gives everything room to breath, I think the a6 one is slightly too small and would make it harder to read' this was counteracted by another student saying 'I disagree there, the the smaller design is pocket sized and would be convenient to flick through, it sits in the hand well and create a cute small oulbicationthat works well with the illustrations creating a relaxed aesthetic, the larger one looks slightly too serious and doesn't work as well'. Based on this feedback I then asked students to vote as t which scale felt more appropriate the a6 scale received more votes however will deliberate further with tutors before deciding on a final scale to ensure the most appropriate selection is made.

update;
When asking a tutor which scale he felt was most appropriate, he said the a6 scale was the best format as it was pocket size and the smaller scale brought the design together, this reassured me that this was the most approbate scale as well as it being my personal favourite, I will produce my design at an a6 scale (a5 spread) as this will be the most effective format for my publication.
