Studio Brief 3 - Gallery Visits

Studio Brief 3 - Collaborative Practise - Leeds Library Exhibition Branding
Primary Research - Gallery Visits

As part of this brief a range of gallery visits were organised to help us further understand how the curation of an exhibition is vital in representing the work to an audience. We visited two main galleries The Hepworth in Wakefield and The Tetley in Leeds we then visited a number of smaller galleries such as the Whitecloth gallery and Leeds Art gallery. These galleries offered different specialisms so was a representative range of galleries, we would be able to clearly see how each gallery curates their work to give us inspiration for our own exhibition as part of this brief. We were also told to collect key collateral and marketing materials for inspiration of how to structure our own collateral as these real life examples would be  a great source of inspiration to inform our resolutions to studio brief 3.

The Hepworth

The Hepworth is a contemporary art gallery located in Wakefield with 6 exhibition rooms comprising of contemporary artwork and sculptures mostly by renowned sculpture dame Barbara Hepworth. The architecture of the Hepworth was very impressive and inside featured modern spaces to exhibit the work filled with high ceilings, clean white walls and full length windows. This gave the gallery a very contemporary, I liked the curation of this gallery as it often gave the work room to breath and didn't feel cluttered. I particularly liked the vinyl decals within the gallery.  I thought the use of a simple floor plan was particularly inventive especially when the works were sculptures and had no idea place for a name tag. The key makes it simple to navigate and could be something we considered within the curation of our exhibition.  I also particularly liked the use of text within the vectorised silhouette of the building distinctive architecture, this makes it unique to the gallery and its interesting shape is eye-catching therefor more likely to be read by an visitors.

Hepworth Collateral

I collected a range of collateral and marketing materials while in the gallery, I liked the layout of the catalogue with a strict 4 column grid and pictures placed at the top of the page, this gave the catalogue a structured aesthetic similar to the clean lines found within the architecture of the gallery. The front cover features a full bleed image of one of the works features within the gallery which I like but feel this wouldn't work for our exhibition as each piece is produced by a different designer, I feel a unique front cover would work best as there will be a range of styles within the exhibition and I wouldn't want to use a students work that would suggest the whole exhibition is in this particular style.

I loved these A6 postcard style feedback forms that were placed within the cafe, they seem friendly and informal with a bold block colour background to give them an instant presence. The front design is extremely simple with only the informant statement 'tell us what you think' and the logo in the bottom left corner. On the reverse side is a simple template that works well with plenty of white space for leaving comments for qualitative data, a scaled question for quantitive data and space for an email to join the mailing list. I think this is a great way to collect feedback based on the user experience and I feel we would try an collect some of feedback from the opening night of our exhibition.

 The Tetley

The Tetley is a contemporary art gallery located in the art deco building of the former brewery  this gallery gave a feeling of heritage with a modern twist with contrasted the feel of the ultra modern Hepworth. One of the main features I found aesthetically pleasing about the curation of the Tetley was the decals on the walls with large bright backgrounds and white text to instantly stand out and make the information more accessible as it was eye-catching and made me want to look closer and read it. The galleries were all labeled with square glass plaques which I felt gave a very professional finish however feel this would not be relevant for our exhibition. I liked the way they displayed their work as this simple row of artwork  leaves plenty of white space and didn't overcomplicate the space, I feel we could definitely work with a similar model when deciding how to hang the artwork for the curation of our exhibition.

Tetley Collateral

I like the catalogue for the Tetley however I feel it may be slightly too busy, as a contemporary art gallery I would have expected a more minimal design, I like the square typesetting of 'whats on' and how the is aligned with the Tetley logo in the top left corner. I really like the lime green banner running along the bottom of the catalogue and wondered if design would have worked better if this was the block background fill with simply the information nicely typeset on the front cover. Inside the booklet is similar to the inside of the Hepworth's catalogue with the images placed at the top of the page and columns below. I personally don't like the use of green circles within the catalogue however it succeeds in drawing the eye to the key information inside.

I also picked up a flyer for an upcoming exhibition, I like the simplicity of this design with a bold textured paining on the front, not over complicate with only the logo placed in the top left corner. On the reverse is a contemporary pink taken from the colour palette of the paining on the front. The information is clear and consider with the essential information in bold and uppercase at the top of the flyer then following on to a smaller explanation of the exhibition. I feel this flyer works well in attracting an audiences attention and informing them about the upcoming exhibition.

Overall I feel the trips to these galleries were extremely useful in obtaining a more holistic knowledge of how exhibition are successfully curated, as a group we will try to isolate the successful elements present within all the galleries we visited and apply them to our own exhibition. We will also use the range of collateral and marketing materials we collected to inform our own design decision in order to create a range of successful collateral that will look aesthetically pleasing and will appeal to the target audience.
