Studio Brief 3 - Exhibition Development

Studio Brief 3 - Collaborative Practise - Leeds Library Exhibition Branding
Exhibition Development

Harriet took the lead with the aesthetic of the physical exhibition which included how the work would be hung, the overall aesthetic of the space, any decals and additional features. Although Harriet lead the main oversight of the exhibition development we felt it was important for us all to contribute to the design and layout of the exhibition to ensure we were all happy with the outcome and we felt that this collaborative effort would ensure the outcome could be as successful as possible. We started with the concept of 45 to brainstorm how we could relate this concept to the physical exhibition, we thought about using vinyl decals of lines at 45 degrees to decorate the walls. We felt this could be a contemporary method to make the space more engaging, these lines could also be used to direct the audiences attention around the space navigating them on a tour of the work.

We took inspiration from our initial research particularly the exhibition by the Brattish Independent Film Festival by incorporating a large vinyl decal of our logo onto the wall as a bold welcoming feature to the exhibition. We discussed the placement of the work itself wanted to make its placement engaging so that the audience interacted with the work as opposed to glancing around the room without appreciating the work. We discussed an innovative idea to place the work at 45 degree angles as this directly relates to our concept and would engage the audience however we were unsure about that practically of this concept as it may be awkward having to tilt your head to view the artwork.

We felt it would be really worthwhile to get some qualitative feedback from the opening night of the exhibition and wanted to find a way for the audience to interact with the work. We came up with the concept of a feedback wall where guest can leave feedback regarding the work and their overall experience. We suggested post it notes could be left for the guests to write comments on and fill place on the wall within a frame similar to our logo, We felt this would be a really effective way for the audience to interact with the exhibition and actually get some feedback from the event to determine if it was successful.

To fill more of the space we thought about using boxes or frames within the space as we felt there was a lot of floor space that wasn't being utilised, we considered placing structures such as boxes or frames within the floor space of the gallery to present the work. We felt frames would be more appropriate than boxes as they relate to our logo and concept more but after enquiring we discovered we would not be able to hang any structures from the ceiling for heath and safety reasons. We mocked up a free standing frame as a solution to this as we felt this would make the exhibition more interactive having to navigate around physical obstacles.

Finally Harriet mocked up an example of the work being hung straight as opposed to at 45 degree angles as we realised this might be slightly impractical. In retrospect this is personally my favourite design as it is minimal yet effective. I think the work hung straight would accentuate the angled decals making them stand out more strikingly. I also think the subtle nature of this concept works well with the logo creating continuity between the physical exhibition and logo.

Overall I am really happy with the development of our exhibition concept, I think it works incorporating elements effectively from our 45 concept. I feel the design works in harmony with our logo design so that the audience will be able to make the link between the two making the overall concept more aesthetically pleasing. I feel this layout for the exhibition would work well in engaging the audience with features such as the comments wall and striking decals that all work together creating an aesthetically engaging exhibition space.
